The 1939 is the median rarity in the Proof Walking Liberty half dollar series, survivors scarcer than those of the 1940, 1941 and 1942 issues but not as elusive as those of the 1936 to 1938 deliveries. A bit more obtainable than the Proof 1938, the Proof 1939 (mintage: 8,808) is usually offered in grades that range from Proof-64 through Proof-67. Proof-68s are moderately scarce, but enough are around that buying opportunities for such coins usually come along several times each tear. The same, however, cannot be said for higher-graded specimens. Like the 1938, several cameos have been certified.
