1923-D Saint Gaudens Double Eagle
The 1923-D is the most available mintmarked double eagle from the Roaring Twenties. Obviously many of the 1,702,250 coins struck were used in international transactions, and thus spared from the widespread melting of gold coins during the late 1930s. Even so, upper end Gems such as this are scarce from a condition standpoint.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the August 2021 Rosemont ANA Auction, where it realized $15,600.
