1916-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar
Only 508,000 1916-S Walking Liberty Half Dollars were struck and most circulated for a very long time. Gems are available for a price, but are elusive. At the Premium Gem level, this date is one of the most difficult to obtain, with only a baker's dozen reported. The Walking Liberty half dollar designs were by Adolph A. Weinman and are considered to be among the most elegant designs produced by this country, Liberty strides left, her arm supporting the flag and agricultural bounty, with the rising sun to the lower left. On the reverse an eagle stands on a rock, with pinion pine nearby, legends surround. As these were the first year of issue, a few more than average were saved, but obviously few are known today that qualify as Gems.
