1915-S Indian Head Eagle
The mintage of 59,000 pieces was greatly reduced by the gold meltings of the 1930s. Perhaps 750 to 1,000 exist today — one third of this number can claim a Mint State grade of those. At the Gem level or finer this is the sixth rarest date and mint in the 32-coin series, and one of the more challenging issues to find in such a lofty state of preservation.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the March 2017 Baltimore Auction, where it realized $99,875.
