1911-D/D Saint Gaudens Double Eagle
The D/D mintmark is unusual and adds interest to this particular issue, where the engraver blundered the mintmark by moving the punch between solid hits, causing the D to be dramatically repunched. Most dies used for gold coinage were carefully checked over so few of these more commonly seen types of die mistakes are lacking from the gold series.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the August 2021 Rosemont ANA Auction, where it realized $10,800.
