With the highest mintage for the type at 4,763 pieces, it should come as no surprise that the 1909 is the most plentiful Proof Liberty nickel. Quality among the survivors varies considerably, however, and most do not display enough field to device contrast to warrant a Cameo designation from the major certification services.

The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the Spring 2022 Showcase Auction, where it realized $2,160.
