1909-D Indian Head Eagle
The 1909-D is one of the more underrated issues in the series and has long been overlooked. It is ranked as the eighth rarest issue in Gem or finer grades and stands tall as one of the rarest of all 20th century gold issues in MS-65 or finer. Many survivors from the mintage of 121,540 pieces show evidence of circulation, the balance are in MS-62 or below with Choice or finer coins scarce.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the August 2013 Chicago ANA Auction, where it realized $105,750.
