1906 Liberty Head Double Eagle
Only 69,596 circulation strike double eagles were coined during the year at the Philadelphia Mint, equal to a face value of $1,391,920. Uncirculated examples are scarce by the standards of the type, Q. David Bowers in 2004 providing an estimate of just 1,000 to 1,500 pieces. Most Mint State 1906 double eagles on the market grade no finer than MS-62 with MS-63 examples decidedly scarce.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the June 2014 Baltimore Auction, where it realized $21,150.
