1905-S Liberty Head Double Eagle
It is believed that the majority of the nearly 2 million double eagles struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1905 were held as backing for gold certificates as very few have been obtained from overseas sources. The vast majority of the Uncirculated examples seen are at the lower Mint State levels.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the February 2015 Americana Auction, where it realized $15,275.
