1903-O Morgan Dollar
Guidelines for Collecting:
At one time, the 1903-O was considered the greatest rarity among Morgan dollars. That all changed in November 1962 when a storage vault in the Philadelphia Mint, sealed since 1929, was opened to gain access to dollars for holiday distribution. The vault held hundreds of thousands of mint-fresh 1903-O dollars! From Guide Book of United States Coins value of $1,500 in Mint state to a new market value of less than $20, it all changed at the opening of a vault. Since then, the price has gone upward, but examples remain very affordable.
Availability in Circulated Grades:
EF and AU examples can be found with little difficulty though the date is common enough in Mint State that circulated coins are often ignored by today’s collectors.
Availability in Mint State Grades:
Well-struck and brightly lustrous examples of the date abound in today’s marketplace, and gem MS-65 coins are easily found. Choose carefully, for not all were created equal.
Availability in Proof:
None produced.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the June 2023 Showcase Auction, where it realized $1,800.
