1902-O Morgan Dollar
Guidelines for Collecting:
This date was not considered common until hundreds of thousands of 1902-O dollars emerged from a sealed vault in the Philadelphia Mint in 1962. At one time the date was considered a rarity in Mint State, but today, Uncirculated grades are very common. Most coins are flatly struck, and some effort is required to find sharply struck specimens. Some Mint State pieces are lustrous and attractive, some are average.
Availability in Circulated Grades:
Always available in EF and AU though the proliferation of Mint State pieces provides for little demand in circulated grades.
Availability in Mint State Grades:
Name your grade, MS-60 up to ultra-gem, and you’ll probably be able to locate a specimen with little difficulty. Look for a Mint State-65 gem coin but also look for a crisp strike and good luster—this should keep you busy for a while.
Availability in Proof:
None produced.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the November 2016 Baltimore Auction, where it realized $11,162.50.
