1901-S Morgan Dollar
Guidelines for Collecting:
The 1901-S is the most elusive San Francisco Mint dollar since 1896, though not as rare. Striking varies from poor to quite good. Weak pieces often show parallel planchet striations from the drawing bench process, often on the face of Miss Liberty. Coins struck from the new hub reverse are usually struck better than those from the old hub. The luster is usually satisfactory.
Availability in Circulated Grades:
Available to an extent in EF and AU, though one must search for a pleasing example at these levels.
Availability in Mint State Grades:
From the 1920s and then again in the 1950s bag quantities of the date were available, though these have long since been absorbed by the collecting community. MS-63 and 64 coins are available but should be selected for a crisp strike and good luster—not all Mint State 1901-S dollars come this way so search and select carefully. Gems are highly elusive and command substantial premiums at MS-65 or finer; we like MS-64 coins with eye appeal.
Availability in Proof:
None produced.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the June 2021 Showcase Auction, where it realized $5,280.
