1901-O Morgan Dollar
Guidelines for Collecting:
Quality varies greatly with the 1901-O Morgan dollar issue, typical for a New Orleans Mint product. Circulation strikes are below average to average, with sharply struck specimens in the minority. Great quantities of 1901-O dollars were released in the 1960s and are plentiful even in Mint State. The luster is usually satiny and quite attractive. Bagmarks are common.
Availability in Circulated Grades:
Easy enough to find though demand is small owing to the availability of Mint State coins. Worn examples are usually tied to the price of silver.
Availability in Mint State Grades:
Readily available in all Mint State grades up through and including the gem category. Collectors will have no problem finding a Mint State-65 example though a coin with a bold strike and minimal bagmarks can be elusive. Check and recheck for strike and eye appeal before buying.
Availability in Proof:
None produced.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the Winter 2022 Showcase Auction, where it realized $18,000.
