1900-S Morgan Dollar
Guidelines for Collecting:
The San Francisco Mint utilized both the old (C-3) and the new (C-4) hubs this year on the Morgan dollar. Mint State specimens are readily available. In worn grades, the 1900-S is fairly scarce. The strike quality varies from weak to sharp, but most are above average. The luster is usually frosty and rich.
Availability in Circulated Grades:
Found in EF and AU though demand is not heavy for circulated examples and you may have to search to find a coin at this level.
Availability in Mint State Grades:
There should be no problem finding a suitable Uncirculated example of the date despite the fact that the 1900-S is not common in Mint State. Keep an eye out for a sharp strike and plenty of luster at the MS-64 level for a satisfactory coin for your collection.
Availability in Proof:
None produced.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the March 2020 Showcase Auction, where it realized $3,480.
