1900 Morgan Dollar
Guidelines for Collecting:
In 1900, a new reverse hub was introduced to replace the old style. On the new hub, the junction of the wing and neck forms a wider U and the stars are larger. The eagle’s breast feathers are somewhat indistinct compared to the old style. Morgan dollars of this date range in strike quality from those with poor definition to well-struck pieces. Sharp pieces exist but take some time to find. Luster varies greatly as well, from dull and unattractive to frosty and lustrous. Proofs usually have a decent strike with a contrast that varies from average to cameo.
Availability in Circulated Grades:
Found with some frequency in EF or AU though those grades are typically ignored by today’s collectors unless a circulated set of Morgan dollars is being assembled.
Availability in Mint State Grades:
The date is readily available in Mint State at just about any grade desired. We like the MS-65 grade for this affordable date, but be certain to shop around for a sharply struck and lustrous example, an activity that might keep you busy for a short period.
Availability in Proof:
Delivered in four quarterly batches beginning in March of the year as typical for Proof issues of the era. Generally available to all who desire an example, this date is found with some frequency with engaging cameo contrast. Look for one of these with solid eye appeal for your collection, and ignore anything else.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the Spring 2019 Baltimore Auction, where it realized $45,600.
