1898 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle
The 1898 has a respectable mintage of 165 pieces that ranks among the highest in the Proof Liberty Head quarter eagle series. With approximately 100 coins believed extant, this is one of the more frequently offered Proof gold coins of its type in today's market. On the other hand, no classic numismatic coin with little more than 100 pieces known can rightly be called common in an absolute sense. Indeed, the 1898 is as rare and desirable as is warranted for an issue that is part of the United States Mint's classic Proof gold series.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the March 2014 Baltimore Auction, where it sold for $55,812.
