1897-S Morgan Dollar
Guidelines for Collecting:
The 1897-S gets high marks on all counts: availability, strike, and luster. The issue is reminiscent of the memorable quality S-Mint coins of the early years of the series. All told, the 1897-S can be delightful. It is readily available in all Mint State grades as well as plentiful in worn circulation grades.
Availability in Circulated Grades:
Always available in grades of EF and AU for those who are building a circulated Morgan dollar set.
Availability in Mint State Grades:
An available date that presents little challenge, even at the gem grade level. Most are sharp and lustrous but keep an eye peeled for exceptions to that rule and then steer clear. A pleasing MS-64 coin should prove ideal for your collecting purposes.
Availability in Proof:
None produced.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the June 2023 Showcase Auction, where it realized $3,720.
