1897-O Morgan Dollar
Guidelines for Collecting:
The 1897-O Morgan dollar is a variety that is ideal for cherrypicking. While most are poorly or lightly struck with below-par luster, specimens can be found with relatively crisp devices and lively luster though these are few and far between.
Availability in Circulated Grades:
Always available in EF and AU, with little attention paid to lesser grades.
Availability in Mint State Grades:
Bag quantities of the date were available from time to time in the 1940s and 1950s. In today’s market locating a Mint State-63 coin with good luster, minimal bagmarks, and better than typical strike will provide a challenge—and a reward. MS-64 and finer coins are scarce.
Availability in Proof:
None produced.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the Larry H. Miller Collection, where it realized $348,000.
