1895 Liberty Head Nickel
Certified Cameo Percentage: 10%
Certified Deep Cameo Percentage: 0.4%
The Mint struck 2,062 Proof nickel five-cent pieces in 1895 and, as Q. David Bowers (2006) observes, most are "quite nice, with deeply mirrored fields." The author's comment is obviously reserved for universally brilliant specimens that dominate much of the PCGS- and NGC-certified populations for this issue. The design elements are seldom frosted to an appreciable degree, for even in the certified Cameo category this issue is elusive.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the Winter 2014 Baltimore Auction, where it realized $3,055.
