1894-S Morgan Dollar
Guidelines for Collecting:
The 1894-S Morgan dollar is an exceptional issue. Most are well-struck, lustrous and possess good eye appeal. Specimens in higher Mint State grades will complement a high-quality collection. The typical 1894-S dollar has excellent luster, but some have die-polishing lines in the field, consisting of tiny raised lines that can make a coin appear as if it has been cleaned. Technicalities such as this are interesting and are not widely known.
Availability in Circulated Grades:
The date can be found in most circulated grades but an EF or AU would be ideal for a circulated Morgan set.
Availability in Mint State Grades:
Available in MS-60 and finer with not much difficulty, though the population thins somewhat at MS-64. MS-65 coins are a definite minority, and anything finer will cost a small fortune when and if found. We like a solid MS-64 coin for this date, one with good luster and a bold strike—fortunately for today’s collectors, many of this date answer that call.
Availability in Proof:
None produced.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the Spring 2023 Showcase Auction, where it realized $15,000.
