1894-O Morgan Dollar
Guidelines for Collecting:
The 1894-O is scarce in Mint State and when specimens are encountered, they are nearly always poorly struck. It will take time to find an example with decent or above average striking detail with attractive luster. Higher grade pieces, while elusive, can have attractive, satiny luster.
Availability in Circulated Grades:
The 1894-O can be found without a lot of difficulty in pleasing circulated grades of VF to AU, though they won’t fall into your lap—you’ll need to search for a nice coin with strong design details.
Availability in Mint State Grades:
This date can present a challenge if you’re looking for a sharp example with lively luster and minimal marks. Even in the higher-grade range, MS-64 and up, this date must be cherrypicked for sharpness and luster, or you can simply settle for an average coin and be done with it. We suggest you search high and low if need be, for a sharp example will often sell for the same amount as a mediocre example of the date, putting the buyer in the driver’s seat at purchase time.
Availability in Proof:
None produced.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the August 2019 ANA Auction, where it realized $45,600.
