1892-O Morgan Dollar
Guidelines for Collecting:
The New Orleans Mint had struck Morgan dollars in earlier years with poor strike quality and little eye appeal. In 1977, however, a bag of 1,000 coins was examined and found to contain a number of fully struck gem pieces, a marvelous exception. The majority of 1892-O dollars are flatly struck at the centers.
Availability in Circulated Grades:
EF and AU can be found with little or no difficulty at most numismatic venues.
Availability in Mint State Grades:
Mint State coins exist at every grade level with the preponderance of specimens found at MS-63 and 64. Finding a well-struck example of the date provides a challenge to today’s collectors, but such pieces can be found with patience and are well worth the effort.
Availability in Proof:
None produced.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the November 2019 Baltimore Auction, where it realized $5,040.
