1892 Morgan Dollar
Guidelines for Collecting:
1892 Morgan dollars produced at the Philadelphia Mint are scarce in higher Mint State grades. Strike quality varies from weak to sharp, but usually average to below average. Luster varies from dull and poor, to lustrous and flashy. Bagmarks are common. Gem or prooflike coins are rare.
Availability in Circulated Grades:
Always available at EF and AU, grades that attract many collectors today.
Availability in Mint State Grades:
A fairly scarce date in all Mint State grades, the 1892 is typically found at MS-60 to 62 or so, with MS-63 coins less easily located. MS-64 and MS-65 coins are more elusive and come into the marketplace with less frequency. Look for a sharply struck and lustrous MS-64 and you will be greatly satisfied.
Availability in Proof:
As with many Proof issues of the era, look for a Proof 1892 Morgan with strong design elements and some cameo contrast and you’ll be ahead of the game.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the August 2021 ANA Auction, where it realized $5,040.
