1891-O Morgan Dollar
Guidelines for Collecting:
In terms of striking quality, the 1891-O is the worst struck of all Morgan dollars. Nearly all specimens show weakness in one area or another and some show flat centers. Sharply struck coins do exist, however, and can be found. Luster ranges from satiny to grainy to dull. The coin also has the distinction of being the only issue in the Morgan series struck from silver obtained under three different pieces of legislation.
Availability in Circulated Grades:
Generally available in all grades for those who desire such coins.
Availability in Mint State Grades:
All grades up to MS-65 are well represented in the numismatic marketplace, and higher grades are seen on occasion. Finding a well-struck 1891-O is nearly equal to finding that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, but unlike the pot of gold, a sharply struck 1891-O may come your way after a long and diligent search. Although readers are welcome to disagree, we do not think that cherrypicking for quality can be overemphasized.
Availability in Proof:
None produced.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the Spring 2019 Baltimore Auction, where it realized $10,800.
