1891 Morgan Dollar
Guidelines for Collecting:
The 1891 Morgan was a high-mintage, generally low-quality issue for the series. The strike is average or below, but not often sharp, with a grainy and unattractive luster. Some searching is required to find specimens with a sharp strike and deep luster.
Availability in Circulated Grades:
Always around and easy to find. Look for nice EF and AU coins in this case.
Availability in Mint State Grades:
Virtually any grade desired can be found for the date, but most are of sub-par quality. Look for an MS-64 coin with bold central features and a frosty and lustrous appearance and you’ll be well ahead of the game for this date.
Availability in Proof:
Many surviving Proofs of the date have been cleaned or mishandled over the years. Finding an attractive coin with bold design elements and a measurable degree of cameo contrast will be a feather in your numismatic cap. You’ll need to look high and low for one but the reward will be substantial.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the Spring 2019 Baltimore Auction, where it realized $8,400.
