1889-S Morgan Dollar
Guidelines for Collecting:
The 1889-S was minted in a comparatively small quantity. At one time it was considered to be among the rarest of all Morgan dollars, until many bags came on the market in the late 1930s to the 1950s. Today, specimens are desirable in all grades. Enough Mint State examples exist to satisfy the serious collector. As with most other coins minted in San Francisco, the 1889-S is usually well struck with excellent luster.
Availability in Circulated Grades:
Available in all circulated grades though EF and AU are not so easy to locate.
Availability in Mint State Grades:
Enough Mint State examples of the date can be found today to satisfy collectors at just about any level. Look for a nicely struck specimen—most of them are—and lively luster at the MS-64 level and you will be amply satisfied.
Availability in Proof:
None produced.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the Larry H. Miller Collection, where it realized $6,000.
