1889 Gold Three Dollar

1889 Gold Three Dollar

Circulation Mintage: 2,300
Estimated Survivors: 240-300 in All Conditions
Obverse Text: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA | LIBERTY
Reverse Text: 1889 | 3 DOLLARS

With the 1889 $3 production of this denomination came to an end. Only 2,300 circulation strikes were made, and of this number many were held back at the Mint and melted in 1893-1894, a curious situation for then they would have sold for a modest premium on the numismatic market. Today we estimate that 140 to 170 Mint State pieces exist, of which can be added 100 to 130 worn pieces.
