1889 Gold Three Dollar
With the 1889 $3 production of this denomination came to an end. Only 2,300 circulation strikes were made, and of this number many were held back at the Mint and melted in 1893-1894, a curious situation for then they would have sold for a modest premium on the numismatic market. Today we estimate that 140 to 170 Mint State pieces exist, of which can be added 100 to 130 worn pieces.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the Spring 2022 Showcase Auction, where it realized $19,200.
