1888-S Morgan Dollar
Guidelines for Collecting:
Compared with earlier Morgan dollars produced at the San Francisco Mint, the 1888-S dollars are not as sharply struck. Quality varies from poor to sharp, with the sharply struck pieces in the minority. Luster of the 1888-S is usually attractive and varies from satiny to frosty.
Availability in Circulated Grades:
This low-mintage date can be found in EF and AU without much difficulty.
Availability in Mint State Grades:
A scarce date in Uncirculated grades though persistent collectors will find MS-63 and 64 coins available. An MS-64 with a sharp strike and rich luster would be a grand addition to any Morgan dollar set.
Availability in Proof:
None produced.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the August 2018 Collectors Choice Online Auction, where it realized $2,400.
