1887 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle
The total mintage for the year was 122 pieces of which perhaps 50 are known in all grades today. Gems are the most prized, and at the Proof-66 level there are just two seen with the Deep Cameo contrast, and none finer. Proof gold coinage of this era is especially beautiful as the Philadelphia Mint had perfected the contrast on Proofs.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the August 2013 Chicago ANA Auction, where it sold for $58,750.
