1887-O Morgan Dollar
Guidelines for Collecting:
The 1887-O Morgan dollar seems to have always been available on the coin market, possibly due to occasional releases of mint-sealed bags known to have occurred in 1938, 1953, 1957, 1964 and other years. Circulated dollars are very common, including high grade AU coins. Typical Mint State coins are heavily bagmarked, and poorly struck with dull luster. The striking of the 1887-O is average or below average as during this era, the New Orleans Mint spaced dies too far apart, resulting in lower quality strikes. The luster of this coin ranges from grainy and dull to frosty.
Availability in Circulated Grades:
Almost always available at coin shows, with AU coins getting the most attention; these are available at a fraction of the cost of Mint State pieces.
Availability in Mint State Grades:
Pick your grade and it’s there for you. MS-64 is a grade that delivers quality and value in our opinion, especially when cherrypicked for strike and luster.
Availability in Proof:
None produced.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the Spring 2019 Baltimore Auction, where it realized $21,600.
