1887/6 Morgan Dollar
Guidelines for Collecting:
In the preparation of dies for 1887 coinage at the Philadelphia Mint, some unused 1886-dated dies were lightly resurfaced and punched with 1887 dates. There is significant demand for the overdate 1887/6, VAM-2 and examples are rare in all grades. The overdate is not easily seen, and some collectors have chosen not to include examples in their collections. Popularity and price have gone up and down over the years. Strike quality is average and most coins have a deep mint frost.
Availability in Circulated Grades:
Circulated 1887/6 dollars can be cherrypicked by looking for that tiny hook-like remnant of the underlying 6 at the base of the 7 in the date. EF and AU pieces are the norm.
Availability in Mint State Grades:
The date is always available to those who search. MS-60 to 62 coins are found more frequently than pieces in a higher grade. MS-63 and finer coins are always in demand. We suggest a lustrous and somewhat boldly rendered example at MS-64 is well worth the search.
Availability in Proof:
None produced.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the March 2021 Showcase Auction, where it realized $2,520.
