1884 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle
The 1884 Proof quarter eagle is doubly desirable. First, only 73 Proofs were minted, of which relatively few survive today. Second, the number of circulation strikes this year was very small, just 1,950. These were placed into the channels of commerce and for the most part quickly became worn.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the August 2013 Chicago ANA Auction, where it sold for $82,250.
