1884-O Morgan Dollar
Guidelines for Collecting:
The 1884-O was minted in great quantity at the New Orleans Mint this year, when silver dollars were the only denomination produced at that facility. Examples are readily available in all Mint State grades. Worn pieces are abundant as well. Striking varies from poor, with no hair detail above Miss Liberty’s ear and little definition of breast feathers on the eagle, to very sharp. Typically, the striking varies from average to a bit above. Luster ranges from grainy to frosty.
Availability in Circulated Grades:
Readily available in circulated grades of EF and AU but the cost for a Mint State coin is small enough that few collectors pursue worn specimens.
Availability in Mint State Grades:
Readily available in all Mint State grades right through the ultra-gem level. There is no reason to avoid a Mint State-65 specimen for they are both plentiful and affordable.
Availability in Proof:
None produced.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the November 2021 Baltimore Auction, where it realized $5,520.
