1883 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle
The Proof mintage for the year came in at 82 pieces. Only a handful of the original mintage in Proof offers a deep cameo contrast. For 1883, a total of 17 grading events are noted between both grading services for deep cameo contrast, with duplication in this group virtually a certainty in that meager number as coins were resubmitted for higher grades. Today, experts at Coin Facts believe there are approximately 50 distinct examples of this Proof issue. Rare not only in Proof but also as a regular issue as the mintage for that year dropped to below 2,000 pieces for commerce.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the March 2014 Baltimore Auction, where it sold for $30,550.
