1883 Morgan Dollar
Guidelines for Collecting:
This 1883 Philadelphia Mint issue of the Morgan dollar is among the most available of those minted in the 1880s. As these were produced in great quantity and often struck in haste, collectors are advised to take care to find attractive pieces. Many coins have weakly defined strikes on the eagle’s breast feathers, due to the dies being slightly too far apart in the coining press. However, most pieces typically have a satiny mint luster, regardless of strike quality.
Availability in Circulated Grades:
There should be no problem in finding a pleasing EF or AU specimen if you are so inclined. Many were released into circulation shortly after the time of striking.
Availability in Mint State Grades:
The 1883 Morgan dollar is a plentiful issue in just about any Mint State grade. Look for a pleasing MS-65 with a strong strike and good luster and you will be amply satisfied with your acquisition.
Availability in Proof:
Much of the Proof mintage for the date is available to today’s collectors, though many survivors have been lightly cleaned or are blotchy in toning. Find an evenly toned specimen with cameo contrast and you’ll be wise to add it to your collection.
