1882-S Morgan Dollar
Guidelines for Collecting:
Large quantities of the 1882-S Morgan dollar exist in Mint State and are easily available. Many coins are heavily bagmarked and fit into the categories from MS-60 to MS-62. Striking ranges from sharp to somewhat weak, with most having above average strikes. Luster is typically deep, frosty and very attractive, similar to the 1881-S.
Availability in Circulated Grades:
Always available in circulated grades with EF and AU not particularly challenging to find.
Availability in Mint State Grades:
Though many coins were paid out in commerce at the time of striking, many bags were never released but were stored at the San Francisco Mint and at the Treasury Building in Washington, DC. It is thought that one million or more examples of the date came out of hiding during the Treasury releases of the early 1960s.
Availability in Proof:
None produced.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the Spring 2023 Showcase Auction, where it realized $8,400.
