1882 Morgan Dollar
Guidelines for Collecting:
The next in a series of high-mintage Philadelphia issues is the 1882 Morgan dollar. Quality varies from sharply struck and very attractive to weakly struck and uninviting. Many coins are heavily bagmarked. The strike varies from excellent to weak in the large circulation mintage. Luster ranges from frosty to somewhat dull, but the majority of coins are quite lustrous.
Availability in Circulated Grades:
All grades are available from well-worn Fine or so to pleasing AU specimens.
Availability in Mint State Grades:
There is no reason today’s collector won’t find just the right coin among today’s population of 1882 Morgan dollars; millions of them are probably still extant. MS-65 coins abound, and setting your sights on a mark-free specimen will enhance your collection greatly.
Availability in Proof:
A large proportion of the Proof mintage for the date still remains, but many of this date have been cleaned or otherwise mishandled over the years. Look for a pleasing specimen with good cameo contrast and minimal hairlines.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the October 2018 Baltimore Auction, where it realized $19,800.
