1881-O Morgan Dollar
Guidelines for Collecting:
The 1881-O dollar is common in AU, or “slider Uncirculated” grade, and high-grade circulated coins are very common as well. Finding a high quality 1881-O should not be too difficult. The strike is usually deep, with some exceptions. Luster varies from frosty to attractive, to somewhat grainy and dull.
Availability in Circulated Grades:
Typically found in lightly circulated grades, EF to AU, and finding a nice AU presents only a modest challenge to those so inclined.
Availability in Mint State Grades:
Plentiful in Mint State, Gems included. Look for coins with few contact marks and good luster. MS-64 is an ideal grade that combines quality and affordability.
Availability in Proof:
None produced.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the December 2020 Auction, where it realized $23,400.
