1881 Morgan Dollar
Guidelines for Collecting:
The 1881 Morgan dollar was struck in large quantities. Quite a few bags were released in the 1950s and 1960s; indeed, so many that in 1955 one dealer offered rolls of 20 Uncirculated coins for $25, equivalent to $1.25 per coin. Today, circulated specimens are very common. However, sharpness of strike varies widely as does the quality of the luster. Lustrous, sharply struck coins with superior eye appeal are hard to find and pose a challenge for the collector.
Availability in Circulated Grades:
Always available in circulated grades with VF and EF pieces often selling for just a tad over bullion value.
Availability in Mint State Grades:
Finding a Mint State 1881 Morgan dollar is an easy task no matter the grade you prefer. MS-65 and 66 pieces are not uncommon. Just be sure to cherrypick for strike and surface quality.
Availability in Proof:
Many of the Proofs struck this year are available today though many have been cleaned at some point; selecting a coin with few hairlines and good all-around eye appeal is essential.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the August 2015 Chicago ANA Auction, where it realized $20,562.50.
