1880-S Morgan Dollar
Guidelines for Collecting:
The only silver coins produced at the San Francisco Mint in 1880 were dollars. They were produced with care and usually with precise die spacing. Today, they are valued and admired for their quality. The 1880-S combines an excellent strike and luster with a plentiful supply in the marketplace. Most examples have deep, frosty luster of great beauty.
Availability in Circulated Grades:
Always around in circulated grades with no shortage of EF and AU pieces for those working on circulated Morgan dollar sets.
Availability in Mint State Grades:
Take your pick, MS-60 to 65 or even higher, and you should be able to locate an example without much difficulty. Much of this mintage was stored at the San Francisco Mint until at least 1913 and beginning in the 1950s bag quantities of the date were released, especially in the early 1960s by the Treasury.
Availability in Proof:
None produced.
1880-S with 80 over 79 and 0 over 9:
These, made in several die combinations for circulation, represent the use in 1880 of 1879-dated dies that were on hand in the die department of the Philadelphia Mint. A Guide Book of United States Coins lists these.
