1880 $4 Stella
Flowing Hair
Judd-1657
Population reports of the major third party grading services list over 40 pieces as having been graded, however it is quite clear that many of these listings are resubmissions of specimens that had already been graded. Most estimates with respect to the number of survivors from this extremely rare and highly esteemed issue place the actual number extant somewhere within the 15 to 20 piece range. This is in dynamic contrast to its sister coin, the 1879 Flowing Hair Stella, of which more than 700 were made, but with several hundred surviving today. Most numismatists have never seen an 1880-dated coin.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the Bergstrom & Husky Collections, where it realized $201,250.
