1877 Gold Three Dollar
Just 1,468 examples of the date were produced for circulation. Today’s population is somewhere between 60 to 100 pieces, of which fewer than a dozen are in true Mint State. Most of those coins hover at the low end of the Uncirculated charts, say Mint State-60 to 62. Mint State-63 can be considered very rare. The rarity of the date has long been recognized with most experts considering the 1877 to be at least as rare as the much-heralded 1865.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the Spring 2022 Showcase Auction, where it realized $144,000.
