1871 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle
The Philadelphia Mint 1871 quarter eagle is a numismatic rarity in both Proof and circulation strike formats. The mintage for the former is a mere 30 coins, for the latter just 5,320 pieces. The Proofs are exceedingly rare in today's market, and only 15 or so can be positively traced. In terms of market appearances the Proof 1871 is rarer still, and even some of the more highly regarded Civil War era Proofs seem to be offered for sale more often.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the Spring 2024 Showcase Auction, where it sold for $14,400.
