1866 Gold Three Dollar
Of the 4,000 circulation strikes of the date produced, it is thought that perhaps fewer than 200 coins can be accounted for today in all grades, with the preponderance of the survivors well-circulated in appearance. Perhaps just 25 to 40 or so 1866 $3s are extant in Mint State. A shipment of two $3 dies to San Francisco this year did not result in any $3 coinage at that facility.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the Spring 2022 Showcase Auction, where it realized $192,000.
