1866 Gold Three Dollar

1866 Gold Three Dollar

Circulation Mintage: 4,000
Estimated Survivors: About 200 in All Conditions
Obverse Text: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA | LIBERTY
Reverse Text: 1866 | 3 DOLLARS

Of the 4,000 circulation strikes of the date produced, it is thought that perhaps fewer than 200 coins can be accounted for today in all grades, with the preponderance of the survivors well-circulated in appearance. Perhaps just 25 to 40 or so 1866 $3s are extant in Mint State. A shipment of two $3 dies to San Francisco this year did not result in any $3 coinage at that facility.
