1864 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle
Of the 1864, just 50 are said to have been struck, probably not at all relevant to the number distributed, especially seeing that 30 were reported in 1863 the year before, and 25 in 1865. As noted on other Proof Quarter Eagle coin pages, Proof gold mintages can be wildly erratic. Today the 1864 Proof quarter eagle is a first class rarity, this being true of its Proof status, the desirability of which is enhanced by the elusive nature of all quarter eagles of this year — circulation strikes are hardly ever seen.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the Kennywood Collection, where it sold for $34,500.
