1855 Gold Three Dollar
Considered especially elusive in Mint State, the 1855 Indian Princess $3 is especially rare in any grade approaching gem. The mintage for the 1855 $3 was 50,555, with only one pair of dies used for the entire coinage run. In the 1880s, when mintages were much lower, many collectors scrambled to buy $3 coins, with the result that Mint State coins can be easily found.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the D. Brent Pogue Part III Auction, where it realized $35,250.
