K-13, Octagonal, 887 THOUS.

Obverse Text: UNITED STATES ASSAY OFFICE OF GOLD SAN FRANCISCO CALIFORNIA | 1852 | UNITED STATES OF AMERICA | FIFTY DOLLS. | 887 THOUS.
Reverse Text: None

Issued by the United States Assay Office of Gold while under the command of Augustus Humbert, these Ingots, the official government name for the issue, were also known as "slugs," "quintuple eagles," and "five-eagle" pieces, the latter two monikers courtesy of the Guide Book. The 1852 $50 is one of the stalwarts of the private gold discipline, and its fame as a Gold Rush issue is noteworthy.
