1849-D Gold Dollar
Extremely popular for mintmarked type purposes, the 1849-D is the premier gold dollar from the Dahlonega Mint. Just 21,588 examples were struck during this gold-rush year, and only about 300 of which survive for today's collectors. The vast majority of these show signs of handling and surface impairment, leaving only 35 or so survivors in all Mint State grades, most of which are in grades of MS-63 and lower.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the August 2021 Global Showcase Auction, where it realized $78,000.
