1845 Braided Hair Cent
Speaking specifically of the Newcomb-14 variety, John R. Grellman in his Die Varieties of United States Large Cents, 1840-1857, considered it to be Rarity-6+. Walter Breen enumerated eight examples in his Encyclopedia of U.S. and Colonial Proof Coins, and acknowledged reports of other pieces. PCGS estimates a total population of 10 to 15 examples.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the August 2014 Chicago ANA Auction, where it realized $23,206.
