1844 Braided Hair Cent
Howard Newcomb identified Proofs as having been struck in 1844, and he assigned them to the variety of Newcomb-1, unaware of the Proof-only Newcomb-8, which is a bit more common. Walter Breen also identified the Newcomb-1 variety as one for which Proofs were struck, but converse to Newcomb, he apparently had never seen one and cited it only from what Newcomb had published. Denis Loring has recorded the two Twin Leaf coins as the only examples he has confirmed.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the July 2015 Baltimore Auction, where it realized $17,625.
